The Path to Achieving Dual CTS-I and CTS-D Certification

The Certified Technology Specialist-Design (CTS-D) certification is a distinguished credential within the audiovisual industry. It symbolizes a professional’s expertise, dedication, and deep understanding of AV systems design. Today, I’d like to explore how both formal education and hands-on experience were pivotal in my journey to earning this esteemed certification.

Obtaining the CTS-D certification is more than just a professional milestone; it’s a significant differentiator.

A small percentage of professionals hold both the CTS-I (Installation) and CTS-D (Design) certifications, and this dual status offers a unique advantage in the industry. It signifies a commitment to excellence and proficiency in both designing and implementing audiovisual projects.

About the Preparation Process

Foundational Resources: The journey began with AVIXA’s CTS-D Exam Prep book and Online AV Design courses. These materials provided a comprehensive foundation and were indispensable for understanding the essentials and complexities of AV design.

Time Commitment: Preparing for the CTS-D exam was a lengthy process, more like a marathon than a sprint. I dedicated several months to intensive study, revisiting reading materials, industry standards, practices, formulas, taking practice exams, and engaging in hands-on exercises. My wife’s support and encouragement were invaluable; she believed in my success even more than I did at times.

Theoretical Learning Limitations: While AVIXA’s materials were thorough, I found them insufficient on their own for the CTS-D exam. They were crucial but didn’t fully cover the diverse scenarios encountered in real-world AV design. This is where practical experience became essential. During the exam, I often wondered if I had studied for the right test because the practice exams seemed far less challenging than the actual CTS-D exam.

The Role of Practical Experience

Real-World Application: Theoretical knowledge provides a framework, but practical experience completes it. Real-world scenarios, adaptability, and troubleshooting on actual projects offer insights that books or online courses can’t fully impart. My field experience as an AV Engineer gave me the nuanced understanding necessary for the exam, which demands intuition and decision-making skills honed through real-life practice. I was surprised by the number of questions with multiple correct answers, requiring the selection of the “best” or “most likely” option.

The Value of Dual Certification

Holding both the CTS-I and CTS-D certifications has amplified my contributions to the AV industry. This dual certification enriches my professional development and adds significant value to my organization, expanding the range of projects we can handle with expertise.

Advice for Aspiring AV Professionals

The journey to dual certification is challenging but extremely rewarding. For those considering this path, remember that formal learning is just the starting point; practical experience is what will drive you to greater heights. Both are necessary to become a true expert in the field.

This journey has been a testament to diligence, preparation, and real-world application. I am grateful for the unique perspective and deep understanding that dual certification has brought me and am excited about the greater contributions I can make to our evolving industry.
